‘Brilliant’: Mark Lawrenson wowed by what rarely-seen Liverpool ace did against Preston
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has praised Reds goalkeeper Adrian for the “brilliant” save he pulled off in the first half of the Carabao Cup win over Preston.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave the rarely-seen stopper only his second outing in more than a year in the fourth-round trip to Deepdale.
With Caoimhin Kelleher absent through illness, Klopp opted to start Adrian and named Liam Hughes and Marcelo Pitaluga on the bench.
Although Liverpool dominated possession in the first half, the hosts were more dangerous in front of goal.
The Reds failed to get a shot on target in the first 45 minutes, while the Lilywhites had three attempts on target.
One of those, in the 28th minute, saw Ali McCann lay the ball across for Sean Maguire to fire from close range, but Adrian was equal to it.
Ryan Ledson’s follow-up was blocked on the line by the face of Neco Williams before Brad Potts fired over.
“What a great move,” Lawrenson said on BBC Radio 5 Live ().
“Adrian – brilliant, brilliant save – but three excellent opportunities for Preston.
“They broke extremely well. Liverpool are taking too many touches.”
Adrian joined the Reds in 2019 on a free transfer after leaving West Ham, and initially impressed.
Shortly after signing, he helped Liverpool win the European Super Cup against Chelsea, keeping out Tammy Abraham’s spot kick.
Although he’s now third-choice, he’s surely giving Klopp food for thought with regards to staking a claim to be Alisson Becker’s deputy.
Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners over Preston, with Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi netting in the second half.
