‘Brilliant’, ‘highly impressive’: Alan Shearer raves about Everton duo
Everton duo Lucas Digne and Allan have been named in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week after helping Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees to an opening-day win.
The Goodison Park side made the trip to London to face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur and came away with all three points thanks to a superb 1-0 victory.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the match-winner for Everton, getting his head onto Digne’s pinpoint cross to thump home in the 55th minute.

As well as providing the assist for Calvert-Lewin’s winner, Digne had more touches, made more passes and attempted more crosses .
Allan, meanwhile, provided Everton with something they’ve long been missing since Idrissa Gueye’s departure, namely tenacity, steel and grit.
Of Digne, Shearer wrote on the Premier League : “The left-back produced more crosses and had more touches than any Everton player, and it was he who swung in the brilliant free-kick for the winning goal.
Of Allan, meanwhile, the England legend said: “Yet another highly impressive debutant, who made so many important tackles and kept Tottenham Hotspur on the back foot.”
TBR View:
Everton were thoroughly impressive at the weekend, Ancelotti’s high-profile signings adding some much-needed strength and quality to a Toffees team which flattered to deceive far too often last term.
The likes of Jordan Pickford, James Rodriguez and Calvert-Lewin could have also been good shouts for Shearer’s Team of the Week.
That said, if Everton continue in the same vein – and with Ancelotti at the helm, they’re bound to – then there’ll be plenty more Blues making headlines and winning plaudits in months to come.
