Brighton could now attempt to sign West Ham target with Billy Gilmour keen on £12.5m Napoli move

Brighton could now sign one of the Championship’s best talents – somebody West Ham want – with Billy Gilmour still possibly moving to Napoli on transfer deadline day.

The Seagulls have decided to change course after Matt O’Riley suffered a gruesome ankle injury on his debut – following a £25m move from Celtic – which is set to sideline him for months as surgery is required.

So, what is the latest on Brighton and Billy Gilmour as West Ham could lose out on a target to the Seagulls? Let’s take a look…

Brighton could sign West Ham target Oliver Arblaster from Sheffield United if Billy Gilmour joins Napoli

TBR Football understand that Brighton are considering a swoop to sign Sheffield United No.4 Oliver Arblaster before the 11pm deadline – with Gilmour keen to join Napoli in a £12.5m deal.

The Seagulls have internally decided to keep the Scotland international at the Amex Stadium after O’Riley suffered his serious injury.

However, sources inform TBR Football that Gilmour himself remains keen to link up with Antonio Conte in Naples – where his international colleague Scott McTominay has just moved – so Brighton are understandably preparing for the Scot’s potential exit by shortlisting the Sheffield United wonderkid.

Arblaster – who is also a target for West Ham – has risen to stardom under Chris Wilder in 2024, captaining the Blades against Manchester United and Newcastle last season, before also wearing the armband again this term as he scores twice in Sheffield United’s opening three Championship outings.

Seagulls will struggle to sign the 20-year-old

The England U20 international would be a fine replacement for Gilmour, although Brighton will have to be incredibly convincing if they are to lure him away from Bramall Lane.

Incidentally, Arblaster recently said that he loves playing for Sheffield United and hopes to do so for a “lot longer” – suggesting he has no desire to leave whatsoever.

The Star the 20-year-old as saying: “I don’t really listen to that. I love playing for Sheffield United, there’s no doubt about it. I’ll just keep my head down, keep playing and hopefully performing well.

“I just want to keep doing my talking on the pitch. Supporting this club and going home and away, watching the team. I just love playing for Sheffield United, and I’d like to do that for a lot longer.”

Therefore, it would be a huge surprise if Brighton sign Arblaster.

Nevertheless, be sure to keep an eye on developments, as anything could happen on transfer deadline day.
