Brentford really thought about signing £22m Tottenham player with Sergio Reguilon

Journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Brentford considered a loan move for another Tottenham Hotspur player before they landed Sergio Reguilon in the January transfer window.

It has been an interesting January window for Sergio Reguilon, who began the month as a Manchester United player. However, his loan move at Old Trafford was terminated early on and he returned to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bournemouth wanted Reguilon. But instead, the Spaniard ended up signing for Brentford on loan as cover for the injured Rico Henry.

Brentford were interested in Bryan Gil

But perhaps Reguilon would have been forced to move elsewhere had events played out differently earlier in the window.

Speaking on the podcast about the future of Bryan Gil, Ben Jacobs suggested that Thomas Frank’s men were also in the mix for the winger as they looked to add further depth in attack.

“Brentford actually wanted to explore a loan earlier in the window, but they didn’t actually move. But they had discussed the player internally due to a mix of injuries and players off to AFCON as well. But nothing happened,” he said.

Winger surely likely to leave Tottenham before the deadline

It has been a mixed time at Tottenham for Gil. He has spent much of his spell out on loan. And he is yet to prove that he can really adapt to the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou has often used the youngster. However, he has mostly come off the bench, finding himself on the pitch for longer than 45 minutes in the Premier League just once this season.

Postecoglou is apparently ready to offload Gil. And it would be little surprise if he did move on in some capacity before the deadline, particularly with Timo Werner already arriving on loan.

Obviously, Brentford are now out of the running unless they were willing to sign Gil permanently. But given the strengths Gil does have, you would imagine that there will be plenty of sides looking to make bids before the deadline.
