Brentford boss Thomas Frank says something ‘a bit crazy’ about Newcastle after 3-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup

Brentford suffered a 3-1 defeat against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

A double from Sandro Tonali and a Fabian Schar strike sealed a 3-1 win for the Magpies, who were unmoved by a late consolation dispatched by Yoane Wissa.

Thomas Frank strangely left the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Mikkel Damsgaard on the bench – despite Brentford sitting comfortably in 11th place in the Premier League – and the Dane was made to pay for not deploying his best XI.

Newcastle swiftly punished Brentford as Tonali put the Magpies 2-0 up before the interval, leaving the Bees with too much to do at St James’ Park.

Speaking after his side crashed out of the Carabao Cup, Frank made a “crazy” comment about Newcastle.

Thomas Frank says Newcastle did “nothing” in the first half besides scoring twice

The 51-year-old told : “It sounds a bit crazy maybe but beside the two goals in the first half they had nothing. In these cup games you need to try to stay in the tie and hopefully be better in the second half, but we gave two bad goals away and then the third one too.

“Our goal for 3-1 was a beautiful goal, so now imagine if it was only 2-1. The pressure builds in the last four or five minutes and you never know what can happen. That is the irritating part but it is what it is.”

As likeable as Frank is, it feels difficult to sympathise with him after leaving the talismanic Mbeumo out of his starting XI – which potentially gave Newcastle encouragement to kill the game off before the Cameroon international did enter the fray.

What Thomas Frank said about Eddie Howe before 3-1 Brentford defeat

Frank called Eddie Howe “fantastic” before this Carabao Cup quarter-final, an understandable comment seeing as the Dane had only ever beaten the Englishman once in seven matches against him.

Now, that record stands at six wins for Howe from eight games against Frank – for whatever reason, the man born in Frederiksværk just cannot seem to outwit the Newcastle boss tactically.

Had he started Mbeumo – who has alerted Newcastle after netting ten goals in 16 Premier League appearances so far this season – things may have turned out differently on Tyneside.
