Brendan Rodgers saw Geoffrey Kondogbia as potential Steven Gerrard replacement

Celtic take on Valencia in the Europa League tomorrow night, knowing they will need to be at their best to get the better of the La Liga side.

Brendan Rodgers knows all too well just how talented some of the players in the Valencia team are. One player in particular who he will know all about is Geoffrey Kondogbia.

The Central African Republic international has recently returned from a hamstring injury and will be hoping to send Celtic out of continental competition this week. The talented 25-year-old, who had previously been capped by France before switching his allegiance, was once a transfer target for Rodgers.

then Liverpool boss Rodgers was interested in the talented midfielder as a potential replacement for the now Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

The same report suggested Liverpool wanted James Milner and Danny Ings on top of Kondogbia. The first two names were snapped up by Rodgers, but he missed out on Kondogbia.

The midfielder joined Inter Milan instead for a fee to have been worth around €30 million (£26.3 million).

Celtic’s boss will now have to hope Kondogbia is still ropey from his previous injury as he knows full well just what this talented Valencia star can do. Hopefully, he will not come back to haunt him.
