Brendan Rodgers makes Liverpool comparison as he pinpoints ideal Celtic captain

Brendan Rodgers has drawn on his experiences at Liverpool in backing Callum McGregor to become Celtic’s new captain.

McGregor has worn the armband this season when Brown hasn’t started, and after 14 years at the club the veteran midfielder will be moving on this summer.

With Brown destined for Pittodrie and a new role as player-coach, McGregor is expected to become the new skipper.

It’s a role that former Celtic boss Rodgers believes he’s capable of being successful in, and the Leicester City manager is well aware of the difficulty involved in replacing a club legend.

It was Rodgers who handed Jordan Henderson the captaincy at Anfield following the departure of Steven Gerrard, whose success as Rangers manager this season means Brown will leave Celtic Park without having achieved 10-in-a-row.

Henderson has gone on to win the Champions League and English Premier League, and Rodgers believes the Englishman is proof that Celtic can replace Brown.

Speaking to the , Rodgers said: “It was always going to be difficult to replace Scott as Celtic captain. It’s just hard to replace Scott, like for like.

“Because he’s one of the last of those types of that generation.

“But someone else can come in and do it. I remember when Steven left Liverpool, it was always going to be a tough task replacing him.

“But the year before, I’d appointed Jordan and he’s gone on to be a great captain for Liverpool.

“I think Callum is the natural successor to Scott. He has different qualities and strengths.

“But he loves the club and knows what it takes to play for and be successful for Celtic.

“He’s the guy to naturally take over.”

McGregor may have failed to hit the heights of previous seasons this time around, but he remains a key figure at the club having made 321 appearances in seven seasons.
