Brad Jones jumps to defence of Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones has jumped to the defence of current custodian Adrian during an interview with

The Spanish stopper came in for some criticism for his performance during a 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break.

He also came in for some stick after allowing Atletico Madrid to come from behind to know Liverpool out of the Champions League last season.

Jones is the current number one with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr and spent five years at Liverpool playing 11 times for the club.

He thinks it’s a bit unfair to drop all the criticism at the doorstep of Adrian, given how little he is called upon by Jurgen Klopp.

“Adrian at the moment, it is crazy because he is getting absolutely smashed by the media and it’s an easy pick.

“He’s the goalkeeper that has come in, yes, he made a mistake, and that can change the tide of a match. But six other goals went it. Liverpool have been so strong defensively. To capitulate as they did is definitely out of character. You can’t turn around and say ‘oh well, it was just Adrian’.

“He has had a few mistakes here and there, but what you don’t realise when you come in as the second choice is, you haven’t played for months on end. People don’t get it. If he plays a run of games, he will become more comfortable in the goal.”

Adrian was originally signed as a player who might prove an ideal backup after being released by West Ham.

Last season when Alisson was injured in the first game, he stepped up with aplomb but has since lost his way a bit.

Improvement

The 33-year-old will probably be between the posts once again when Liverpool play Everton tomorrow and he does need to up his game.

Caoimhin Kelleher is the backup right now and he remains somewhat raw when it comes to playing in the Premier League.

It would seem with Liverpool not persuing another goalkeeper that Alisson won’t be out for that long and in the meantime Adrian will hope to play his way into form.

The Reds will take on Everton looking to end their rivals’ perfect start to the campaign.
