Borussia Dortmund urged to sign Liverpool star in January

Divock Origi’s future at Liverpool is clearly up in the air ahead of the January transfer window with reports claiming The Reds are willing to sanction his exit – and Borussia Dortmund have been urged to land the Belgian by Stefan Effenberg.

Origi, 25, has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool following the addition of Diogo Jota. This season, he has managed just seven appearances in all competitions – scoring only once in a 7-2 Carabao Cup win over Lincoln City.

Third choice behind Jota and Roberto Firmino, Origi will have one eye on Euro 2021 and a move may be required to show Roberto Martinez why he deserves to feature – especially because he is failing to earn the required game time.

Ex-Germany and Bayern Munich star Effenberg has discussed the former Lille man’s forward and has urged Dortmund to lure him to the Bundesliga as cover or competition for Erling Haaland. Liverpool could sanction his exit.

“Two other candidates for a winter transfer or at least a loan deal until the end of the season: Divock Origi from Liverpool or Mauro Icardi from PSG. They haven’t played there this season, just sat on the bench,”

“But they have long since proven their skills and might help immediately. Origi scored for Liverpool in the 2019 final against Tottenham to win the Champions League. Icardi was the top scorer twice in the Italian Serie A.”

TBR’s view – Origi should go to Dortmund if he gets the chance

Dortmund need cover for Haaland and while the Norwegian striker would clearly be first choice over Origi, the Liverpool ace would slot in as immediate cover. An injury to Haaland could see him start – and certainly Origi would appear from the bench.

If Origi has any future at Liverpool, then he needs to go on loan to Dortmund and show Jurgen Klopp what he can do. Failing that, a loan move could see him earn a summer transfer – and a place in Euro 2021. If an offer comes in, it is a no brainer.
