Borussia Dortmund midfielder Thomas Delaney awarded 2/6 for international display amid Southampton interest
Reported Southampton target Thomas Delaney endured a disappointing display for Denmark in their final Euro 2020 warm-up on Sunday night.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder featured as an early second half substitute as Kasper Hjulmand’s side beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0. Goals from Martin Braithwaite and Andreas Cornelius either side of the break proved the difference at the Brondby Stadion.
Hjulmand opted to rest Delaney from the start after the 29-year-old started last Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Germany. He played the full 90 minutes against Joachim Low’s men alongside Saints defender Jannik Vestergaard, who was rested on Sunday.
Euro 2020 could offer Southampton their final chance to scout Delaney ahead of a potential transfer. (18/05, 09:27) report Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are ready to launch a bid to sign the midfielder as Dortmund are prepared to cash in.
The Bundesliga outfit are looking for a fee in the region of €10million (£8.5m) after he fell out of favour. Delaney started appearances across all competitions last term, and offered one goal and five assists.
Delaney could now leave the Westfalenstadion as he will enter the final year of his contract next month. Dortmund paid Werder Bremen €20million (£17.2m) to sign the holding midfielder () in 2018.
But his cameo performance against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday night was far from commanding.
Danish publication gave Delaney a 2/6 rating for his efforts. The score reflects a disappointing or below-average display, having suffered two horror moments during his second-half appearance.
“Get on the field after 59 minutes of play. Pushed the ball nicely to the side, but he also had a big mistake in the second half that could have cost. Wasted later a great opportunity, they wrote.”
TBR’s view: Southampton need a better Delaney
Delaney enduring two sub-par moments in just half an hour on the pitch will not have been what Southampton wanted to see. Instead, there will be a few at St Mary’s questioning if the Borussia Dortmund man would be the right signing.
But the midfielder still has time in his favour to turn things around and secure a summer move to England. A strong standout showing at Euro 2020 in a group with Belgium, Finland and Russia may be enough to convince Hasenhuttl to spend.
However, Delaney boasts an impressive track record in Germany, meaning Southampton will not be dismayed by one bad display. He has proven over the past four years in the Bundesliga what he can offer in the deep-lying playmaker role. So Southampton will expect to see a better Delaney at Euro 2020.
