Bobby Zamora responds when asked if John Terry could join Aston Villa, suggests another name

that he spoke to John Terry about Aston Villa last week – but also suggested Frank Lampard as a suitor.

It comes after Villa announced the decision to sack Dean Smith on Sunday. Spending more than three years at Villa, he managed 139 games.

A boyhood Villa fan, Smith won 55 of his 139 games – gaining promotion into the Premier League and keeping them in the top tier since.

Narrowly escaping the drop in 2019-20, Villa were much-improved in 2020-21. But this season, after losing Jack Grealish, they have struggled.

Terry, who worked under Smith at Villa having ended his career there, is being linked with a return. Zamora responded, mentioning Lampard.

“I spoke to him last week, he mentioned Dean being under a lot of pressure. Would he be interested? Yes, I think he would,” Zamora said.

“It would be an interesting one, but Lampard is a good option. You have five weeks to work before January. I’m not sure about JT, we’ll have to wait.”

Zamora on Terry: Who could take over at Aston Villa – Lampard?

Terry is well-liked at Villa. But where Terry has that connection with fans and the majority of the players, after his time as coach, he lacks experience.

Lampard is the other way. He does not have the connection, he does not have the relationship with fans or players – but does have time as gaffer.

While people are suggesting Terry or Lampard, surely it makes more sense for Terry to rejoin as assistant manager – and Lampard as manager?

Working together, the duo would combine to be the perfect gaffer for Villa. Young, vibrant and stacked full of potential – much like Villa’s squad.
