Bittersweet honour as Richarlison call-up comes courtesy of good friend’s injury

Everton’s summer recruit Richarlison was left with reason to celebrate yesterday, as he received his first call-up to the senior Brazilian national team.

The 21-year-old has been called into the Brazil squad to face the United States and El Salvador in friendlies this month. It comes after the young attacker scored three goals in his first three games for Everton since his big-money move from Watford in the summer. He already has 10 caps for the Brazil under-20s, scoring three goals.

It is a great moment for the player and his club, with Everton loving the idea of having a Brazil international in their ranks.

But the reason why he is in the squad is not the ideal scenario for the player. Richarlison was initially left out of the squad but has been called in due to an injury to in-form young attacker Pedro.

“Pedro is a very focused boy, everyone is watching him shine, scoring many goals. He only has to grow up, just keep his head in place because he is a great player.”

He is a good friend of Richarlison’s, having formed a potent attack with the player during their time at Fluminense together. The Everton man has spoken in the past of his strong friendship with what now appears to be an international rival. This was also the fellow 21-year-old’s maiden call-up for Brazil.

No doubt Richarlison would have preferred his call-up to have come to the detriment to somebody less close to him. But in the competitive Selecao process, the Everton man will need to take his chance.
