‘Big problem’… Ally McCoist thinks 25-year-old should be starting over £30m player for Arsenal now

Ally McCoist has admitted he would pick Aaron Ramsdale over David Raya for Arsenal.

Speaking on this morning, the pundit claimed Mikel Arteta has caused a ‘big problem’ with his decision over the Arsenal number one spot.

Aaron Ramsdale has found opportunities hard to come by in the Premier League this season after the arrival of David Raya.

The 25-year-old has started just once in the league since losing his place as Arsenal’s number-one following the 3-1 win over Manchester United in September. His only start in the league came against Brentford as Raya was ineligible to play due to him being on loan from the Bees.

Despite Arteta insisting he wants to keep Ramsdale at the club this week, the shot-stopper’s future in North London remains up in the air.

But Ally McCoist believes he should be starting over Raya for Arsenal.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday morning, McCoist believes that while Raya is a decent goalkeeper, he doesn’t understand why Arsenal moved to replace Ramsdale.

“He [Arteta] has given Ramsdale a big, big problem,” the Scottish football legend said. “It’s a funny one, looking at the two goalkeepers, I’m probably starting Ramsdale first anyway. I really am.

“I think David Raya is a good goalkeeper, I genuinely do, but I didn’t see a lot wrong with Ramsdale, anything but.”

Ramsdale was a key man under Arteta last season and was one of the standout goalkeepers in the league.

It was a surprise to see Arsenal move to snap up Raya. But it’s evident the man is now first-choice between the sticks.

There has been a lot of noise around the situation already this season and you’d imagine the talk won’t subside until one of the two players moves on.

At this stage, Ramsdale looks the more likely to seek out a fresh challenge as he’s struggling for minutes in an Arsenal shirt.
