‘Big coup’… Alan Shearer thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already made a huge ‘statement’ at Manchester United

Alan Shearer believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already pulled off a ‘big coup’ after Manchester United appointed Omar Berrada as its new CEO.

The news that Berrada has switched Manchester City for Man United came as a shock to the footballing world on Saturday.

Berrada worked at Barcelona before joining City Football Group back in 2011, working as the chief operating officer for the past eight years.

The arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS is expected to bring about huge change at United after the club has lacked direction since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The appointment of Berrada is certainly a huge statement of intent from INEOS and Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on the move.

Shearer says Berrada appointment is a ‘big coup’ for United

Speaking on , Gary Lineker discussed Berrada’s surprise switch to Old Trafford.

“I wonder if that was the first major appointment for Sir Jim Ratcliffe, I imagine it was his decision,” Lineker said.

“It’s got to be,” Shearer responded. “It’s a coup for them, the way Man City has been.

“It’s a big coup for them and a statement. It has to be his decision.”

Lineker added: “It’ll be fascinating to watch and see if he makes a big difference at Man United.”

Changes behind the scenes at United have been long overdue and bringing in Berrada feels like a positive step in the right direction.

has reported that the decision to appoint the City chief was indeed made by Ratcliffe, in consultation with Joel and Avram Glazer.

Yet, it’s also noted that INEOS were the ‘driving force’ behind the move for Berrada.

While there is still plenty of work to do for INEOS, United fans have every right to be excited about this move.

United have lacked real leadership over the past 10 years and it’s led to them being knocked off their perch in English football.

City have gone on to dominate during this period and bringing in someone who was heavily involved in their success feels like an astute move.
