Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear has suggested that Newcastle United could be about to take a big gamble in the transfer market.

Big risk?

how Newcastle have agreed a £25 million fee with Arsenal for the young midfielder.

Willock is now expected to move to Newcastle on a permanent deal, after impressing on loan.

However, at their current price, Kinnear has suggested that Leeds felt both Willock and his Arsenal teammate, Eddie Nketiah, were just too risky to purchase for his side.

And Leeds instead would rather target other markets for English players.

“If we can work at the level before they get to £20/£25 million [that’s ideal].
Because buying English players for £20 or £25 million who really still haven’t properly delivered in the Premier League – Nketiah, Willock,” he said.

“Both are fantastic talents, but they are big bets to put on players to deliver immediately in the Premier League.

“We think that the level just before is probably the optimal time to purchase them.”

The return of Willock

Newcastle will argue that they have seen Willock’s talents first hand, and that he isn’t a gamble.

However, he has only really produced in the Premier League over a small period of time, and it will be interesting to see how he performs over the course of the season.

Kinnear’s view on Nketiah may highlight why Arsenal are struggling to sell him this summer.

Arsenal have had England under-21 record scorer up for sale, but no club have met their asking price yet.

Leeds, meanwhile, have been busy bolstering their under-23 ranks, with the addition of Lewis Bate from Chelsea one piece of business which could prove to be very smart in future years.
