TBR View: The three clubs who should be targeting Tammy Abraham this summer
After coming through the Chelsea academy and breaking the curse of the number 9 shirt, Tammy Abraham had the world at his feet last season.
The England international had firmly asserted himself as the club’s number one striker, with the attacker bagging 18 goals in all competitions and looked like a shoo-in to be Chelsea’s leading man for the next few years. But then, disaster struck.
The transfer ban which Chelsea had been serving was lifted, and predictably, the Blues did a madness in the market as they spent nearly £200m on new players in the summer of 2020, including a reported £47.5m on RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner as well as £75.8m for Bayer Leverkusen starlet Kai Havertz as , a player who Thomas Tuchel has preferred in the striker role in recent weeks over Abraham.
Indeed, these signings have severely hampered Abraham’s playing time with Chelsea, and with that the club are willing to listen to offers of around £40m for the 23-year-old, a summer transfer is likely on the cards for the young striker.
But where should Abraham move to? Here, we detail three clubs that could be possible destinations for the attacker, and why he would suit them should a transfer ever happen.
West Ham
As per The Telegraph report, West Ham are believed to be one of two Premier League clubs monitoring Abraham’s situation, alongside Leicester City. But out of the two sides, it is clear that the Irons are the more realistic option as well as the most exciting proposition.
The Hammers have had an incredible season under David Moyes, and it has been made even more unbelievable when you factor in that they have spent the majority of the year not playing with a recognised striker, with wingers Michail Antonio and Andriy Yarmolenko filling in the role up top.
If West Ham can claim a European spot, they immediately become an attractive proposition for players like Abraham, and alongside the likes of Jarrod Bowen and an inform Jesse Lingard, the Chelsea man could flourish for the east London side as well as continue to play continental football.
Borussia Dortmund
This summer is likely to be dominated by one headline player, Erling Haaland. The Borussia Dortmund striker is one of the most in-demand attackers in world football, with the aforementioned Telegraph report citing Chelsea as one of the teams interested in the Norwegian international, and if the 20-year-old was to leave Germany this summer, Abraham could be a realistic replacement for the Bundesliga club.
Whilst Abraham has no experience playing outside of Europe, joining Dortmund has become a favourite for English players looking for their first step into playing on the continent, with Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho current stars for the German giants.
Given the physical similarities between Haaland and Abraham, the England international could be a smart replacement for the wonderkid at Dortmund, and his experience of playing in the Premier League could mean that a transition to the Bundesliga, as well as to an environment where British players have flourished, could result in another European success story.
Arsenal
It’s become a meme at this point that players Chelsea deem not worthy in their squad are shipped off to Arsenal to destroy them from the inside, with ex-Blues David Luiz and Willian joining the Gunners in recent windows with mixed success for the north London club, yet Abraham could be a rare exception where one man’s trash could be another man’s treasure.
Goals have been a big problem for Arsenal this year, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suffering one of the worst seasons of his entire career so far, leaving Alexandre Lacazette to shoulder most of the goalscoring burden despite claiming that the Frenchman could leave the club this summer.
And should Lacazette leave, with that Eddie Nketiah could leave the Gunners as well, a striker will be a necessity for Arsenal, and in Abraham, with his Premier League and UEFA Champions League experience, they could have their replacement as well as a perfect foil for Aubameyang, who will be 32-years-old in June.
