Ben Woodburn facing fight for his Liverpool future, set for make-or-break 12 months

Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn has joined League One outfit Oxford United on loan,

The 19-year-old has been on the pre-season tour to America with the Liverpool first-team and a chance to shine seemed likely.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has extinguished those thoughts now, however, and has sent the academy prospect on loan again.

Woodburn flopped on loan at Sheffield United last season. In eight games in all competitions, he failed to contribute to a goal.

Now a move to League One beckons for Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer and it really feels like last chance saloon for the forward.

Having been included in so much of the club’s pre-season plans, Woodburn must have been optimistic.

Instead, he has seen the likes of Bobby Duncan and Rhian Brewster bypass him on the conveyor belt of talent.

Woodburn does still have things in his favour.

For starters, his versatility is a massive attribute. He can operate as a striker, on the wing or in the space behind a lone striker.

He does have time on his side too. At 19, Woodburn is still developing and Liverpool will hope his progression rate improves in the coming months.

A move to Oxford could prove perfect. The chance to play frequently in a league that he should excel in will be the perfect tonic for the youngster’s confidence.

One thing seems certain regarding Woodburn and that’s the importance of this latest loan spell.

His move to the Kassam Stadium simply has to work out. If he flops in the third tier of English football then his prospects at Anfield will look increasingly bleak.
