Ben Godfrey cameo for Everton against Liverpool a sign of things to come – TBR View

Everton and Liverpool played out a pulsating 2-2 draw in the latest instalment of the Merseyside derby, in game which seemed to have everything at Goodison Park.

Red cards, goal mouth action, and some shocking challenges, it was everything a derby should be. Although, in fairness, the shocker from Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk blighted an otherwise ferocious but fair encounter.

Everton were once again led impressively by the likes of James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure. Both summer signings enjoying excellent games in their first taste of Merseyside derby action.

But in defence, all eyes were on new addition, Ben Godfrey, who was thrust into the action in place of Seamus Coleman with around half an hour gone.

A £25m signing from Norwich at the end of the window, Godfrey was entrusted by Carlo Ancelotti in the one of the biggest games of the season for the Toffees. And Godfrey, who was out to impress, did not disappoint.

Battling

Right from the off, it was clear that Godfrey was out to show he was made of the right stuff to compete in the derby clash.

The 22-year-old chucked himself into a few crunching tackles within minutes of entering the field, setting the tone for himself and some of his teammates around him.

It was clear there was some adrenalin there from Godfrey, but as the game carried on he settled into his role nicely. His performance was that of someone keen to impress but he also showed moments of quality, combining nicely with the likes of Rodriguez at times and demonstrating his ball-playing abilities.

So while it’s early days for the defender who Rio Ferdinand is a , Everton look to have a fine player on their hands for the here and now, as well as the future.
