Ben Foster should be more tempted by potential Tottenham move

In a surprising report at the start of the month, that Ben Foster was on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

that Jose Mourinho was keen on signing Foster as a back-up for Hugo Lloris. However, the report noted that landing the 36-year-old may be tricky given that he is playing regularly for Watford.

Indeed, at this stage of his career, you could understand why Foster may have preferred to stay at Vicarage Road or at least join a club where he has received assurances that he would start as the number one.

But less than a fortnight since that report emerged, perhaps Foster would be forgiven for being a lot more tempted by the chance to join Tottenham should the chance present itself this summer.

Questions may well now be being asked of Hugo Lloris’s long-term future at Spurs following Tuesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of RB Leipzig.

Lloris should have arguably done a lot better with Leipzig’s first two goals. And that performance came after he also made an error for Burnley’s goal in their draw at Turf Moor at the weekend.

Lloris has shown that he is still capable of colossal performances. But those colossal displays have almost become the anomalies in more recent times.

There looks to be an opportunity for someone to push for the number one spot at Tottenham. And that should arguably make a switch a lot more tempting for Foster.

Some fans will unquestionably have their doubts about Foster, particularly if they sense he could become first-choice.

But he has been outstanding for Watford this season. And there appears to be little reason why he cannot continue to impress for a few more years yet.

Spurs may change their plans if they decide they want to replace Lloris rather than bring in an understudy. They may want a marquee option signed to immediately take Lloris’s spot.

But if Foster is signing on the basis that he is providing cover for the club captain, perhaps the former England international can come in with a belief that overtaking Lloris in the pecking order is not beyond him.
