Ben Davies criticised for 4/10 display in Wales loss to England

Ben Davies has come in for criticism after Wales’ defeat to England in their final game at the World Cup, that the Tottenham Hotspur star was unusually off-colour against Gareth Southgate’s side.

Rob Page’s men disappointing tournament is now over. Wales already knew that they faced an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages as they needed to beat England and then hope the USMNT drew with Iran.

The US ultimately won. But that result did not matter anyway with England winning 3-0.

Wales were extremely poor, particularly when you consider what was riding on the game. And one of those who struggled to cope with the quality the Three Lions had in attack was Davies.

Ben Davies criticised after Wales loss

The 29-year-old started at left-back for the Euro 2016 semi-finalists. Unfortunately, Wales Online ended up handing the defender a 4/10 rating.

“Another who struggled to deal with Foden, but would probably argue he was left too exposed by this team-mates,” .

“Stood up well in the one-on-one for much of the first half, but lost possession too easily for England’s second goal after the break. An unusually, off-colour performance. Forced off with an injury.”

Wales will be extremely unhappy with their showing in Qatar. Ahead of the tournament, the safe bet suggested that it was a toss-up between themselves and the US to join England in the knockout stages.

They were poor against Gregg Berhalter’s men in their opening game. Ultimately, they were relying on an extremely poor challenge to hand them a penalty which allowed them to snatch a point.

Most of the damage was done in the game against Iran. The two late goals left Page’s side with a mountain to climb – up against one of the tournament favourites, no less.

Several key men have failed to really show up in this tournament. And Davies – given his seniority – will be one of those who will not be happy with his contribution.
