Ben Chilwell has surely ousted Danny Rose as England’s number one left-back

Ben Chilwell provided three assists for England against Montenegro on Thursday, leaving Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose to accept his starting prospects are surely dead and buried.

The Leicester City man was imperious at Wembley, setting up Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Harry Kane twice in the first half of the Euro 2020 qualifier.

£50 million-rated Chilwell () was earning his ninth Three Lions cap in England’s 1000th game, and continued his fine club form for Gareth Southgate’s side.

The 22-year-old has been terrific for the Foxes in the Premier League so far, and he has done himself no harm at all to be the regular left-back going forwards.

Certainly, it was the kind of performance that may now prompt the gradual phasing out of Spurs full-back Rose.

TBR’s view – Rose to be phased out?

Rose has made just four starts for his country this calendar year, and there is a suggestion that Southgate is ready to start using Chilwell as his number one left-back.

Rose has had a poor start to 2019/20 as have a lot of his Tottenham teammates, and he doesn’t appear to be the same exuberant full-back as a couple of years ago.

He’s had some rotten luck with injuries, and turns 30 next summer.

It could well that his days of being an England regular are now over, and he’ll have to work hard to turn things around to get himself on the plane to next summer’s European championships.
