Beating Arsenal in reported race would see Tottenham finally admit £10m mistake – TBR View

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly battling plenty of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Cruz Azul midfielder Orbelin Pineda ahead of the January window, including Arsenal – but a move for Pineda is a blow for a current Spurs star.

Pineda, 24, is one of the first names on the team sheet with Cruz Azul and has emerged as a regular with his Mexico. He offers versatility all over the midfield, being able to play on either flank, central midfield and in the 10 role.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Wolves, Everton, Southampton, Newcastle and West Ham are all interested in Pineda – who moved to Cruz Azul in the summer of 2016 for £10million. European clubs are also keen.

He is hardly going to start for Spurs, if Jose Mourinho won the race for the midfielder. He has had a hand in just 15 goals during 68 appearances for Cruz Azul, but he is the kind of talent that is great as a squad player – given his versatility.

Naturally a winger, Pineda is best on the left flank and while he would be a good addition especially with Tottenham in the Europa League – his signing will prove a blow to a current Tottenham man, in the form of a Mauricio Pochettino signing.

Spurs bought Clarke for £10million () in 2019 and he since has since returned to Leeds on loan, and then joined QPR. He only just managed to make his debut for Spurs against LASK as a substitute, but remains very much a fringe player.

Spurs have signed Gareth Bale, while also boasting Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and Clarke. Ryan Sessegnon has gone out on loan. So, Clarke’s chances of being a success at Spurs is already unlikely.

Beating Arsenal to the signature of reported target Pineda would not only add to that already enormous competition, but it is likely to be the final nail in the Tottenham coffin for Clarke.
