BBC pundit so impressed by what Tottenham defender did in 80th minute against Bournemouth

Paul Robinson has lauded Emerson Royal for the role the Tottenham Hotspur defender played in their third goal of the afternoon against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Spurs rounded off 2023 with an impressive victory against one of the in-form teams in the Premier League. Pape Matar Sarr, Heung-min and Richarlison all scored for Tottenham in the 3-1 victory.

The goal for Richarlison would have settled the nerves with Andoni Iraola’s side creating a number of chances of their own.

It was a key moment for the Brazilian who has found his goalscoring form again. But speaking on , Paul Robinson was keen to praise the forward’s countryman, noting that he did superbly to set Brennan Johnson away.

“This is the third goal. Once again, it’s Max Aarons the full-back. Great ball by Emerson Royal in behind,” he said.

“Brennan Johnson latches onto it, doesn’t even look up. Doesn’t have a touch. Max Aarons gets sucked in there, the Bournemouth full-back. Emerson Royal plays a fantastic ball in behind him and Brennan Johnson doesn’t even have a touch, doesn’t look up, knows where Richarlison is. And Richarlison, there he is, five in five.”

Full-backs helping Spurs navigate through tricky period

It is a boost that Tottenham have negotiated yet another game without their two centre-backs. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are both sidelined right now. And that is a big blow for Spurs given how impressive the pair were together in the opening stages of the campaign.

Both Emerson and Ben Davies have had difficult moments. However, they have performed well at times over the last few weeks. So they do deserve credit.

It takes a bit of pressure off as Tottenham look to sign another centre-back. Spurs are interested in Radu Dragusin. And they have been linked with a move for Jean-Clair Todibo. So Ange Postecoglou will be hoping that they can address that situation as soon as possible.

But with Emerson impressing against Bournemouth on Sunday, Tottenham may feel that they do not need to panic in this window.
