BBC pundit so impressed by 2023 Manchester United signing despite defeat

Dion Dublin issued his verdict on the performance of Jonny Evans as Manchester United were beaten in the derby by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United fans must have wondered whether it was going to be their day. Marcus Rashford put Erik ten Hag’s side in front with a stunning strike from distance after just eight minutes.

And it appeared that the ball was just not going to go into the net for City. Andre Onana made some brilliant stops. And Erling Haaland missed an open goal from just a couple of yards out.

City however, would turn the game around in the second-half. It was a Phil Foden inspired comeback, with the Englishman scoring twice for the champions. Haaland would score late on after a mistake from Sofyan Amrabat.

Jonny Evans started against Pep Guardiola’s side alongside Raphael Varane. The Northern Irishman was replaced during the second-half with the scoreline at 1-1. And speaking on , Dion Dublin suggested that the 36-year-old gave a good account of himself.

“Jonny Evans has had a good game today, an old head on old shoulders,” he said.

“He knows the game well and he has done brilliantly.”

A quietly brilliant signing

Of course, Manchester United were always going to need to ride their luck to get anything from the game. Ultimately, City know that they are going to need to be nearly perfect to stand a chance of regaining their title now that a three-horse race is underway.

But Evans and Varane used all of their experience to try and frustrate City. And at one stage in the first-half, Evans threatened to lead something of a counter attack.

Only Casemiro won more challenges than the veteran, according to . Meanwhile, he also made four clearances and two interceptions.

Obviously, in an ideal world, Evans would not be playing for Manchester United at this stage of his career. But he deserves enormous credit for how good he has been since his return.
