BBC Pundit shares what left Steve Bruce ‘absolutely gutted’ during Newcastle defeat to Tottenham
what Steve Bruce did on the touchline, after Jonjo Shelvey received a red card as Newcastle lost 3-2 to Tottenham on Sunday.
In front of Newcastle’s new owners, Tottenham came from behind to cancel out Callum Wilson’s early header. It was another typical Toon display.
Wilson’s header sent the home crowd into raptures, but by half-time – struggling Newcastle had conceded three to Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
First, Tanguy Ndombele cut inside and curled one into the top corner. Then, Harry Kane broke his Premier League duck, after a lengthy VAR check.
A third came after a stoppage, in which a fan received CPR – now in a stable condition. Son Heung-min getting the goal, making it 3-1 at the break.

Spurs were comfortable, even despite Eric Dier’s own goal. Shelvey inexplicably got himself sent off for a second yellow on 83 minutes.
Nevin, , shares how Bruce reacted to the red – clearly fuming with Shelvey. He says Bruce was “absolutely gutted”.
“So stupid from Shelvey. There is another defender between him and the keeper. That’s really letting your manager, your team, fans down to do that.
“Steve Bruce is not even looking at him. He’s absolutely gutted at the madness of that tackle, that is the daftest tackle I’ve seen in a long time.”

Nevin on Bruce: Newcastle deserved 3-2 defeat to Tottenham
But could it be a silver lining? Clearly, Newcastle were outplayed and while the scoreline suggests a close game, on another day, Spurs could have 4-1.
They deserved to lose, despite a good first 15. While the loss will sting, especially on the dawn of a new era, it could just be a potential blessing.
With the new owners in attendance, it shows them just how much work needs doing. It shows just how much chance is required.
Now, having watched the defeat, they will surely be so much more tempted to spend in January – and, sack Bruce.
