BBC pundit reacts to Rodrigo Bentancur display in Tottenham win

Matt Jarvis has issued his verdict on the performance of Rodrigo Bentancur as the midfielder made a surprise return to the Tottenham Hotspur side for their win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Spurs rounded off a dramatic 2023 with a 3-1 victory over the Cherries in North London. The result leaves Ange Postecoglou’s side just one point behind Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Tottenham’s run of bad luck with injuries continued with the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Alejo Veliz coming off in either half. But there was also some better news with Rodrigo Bentancur handing Spurs a massive boost.

Matt Jarvis praises Rodrigo Bentancur after Tottenham return

Bentancur was expected to be out until February after coming off in the defeat to Aston Villa just over a month ago. He was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge from Matty Cash.

But the Uruguayan lasted until just before the hour-mark against Andoni Iraola’s side. And speaking on (broadcast on 31/12; 15:15), Jarvis suggested that Bentancur did really well upon his return.

“You can’t forget we played 58 minutes in the first-half, so, he’s done really well,” he said. “He looks sharp, especially in that first-half. Really silky touches. I think that’s what they miss in that midfield. He’s very comfortable on the ball. He takes his time, he’s very relaxed. And he’s done a good 58 minutes there.”

Huge boost for Spurs

Bentancur was one of the only bright points about last season for Tottenham. The 26-year-old was their third highest goalscorer in the Premier League – despite missing much of the campaign due to injury.

So it is massive for Ange Postecoglou to have him back so soon. If he can enjoy a run of games in the side, he could make a huge difference in Tottenham’s campaign.

And Spurs have secured a really impressive win given the form Bournemouth had been in.
