BBC pundit lauds Jesse Lingard’s ‘great composure’ to deliver at important moment for West Ham United
BBC Sport pundit Leon Osman has lauded Jesse Lingard’s composure to put an off-night at West Bromwich Albion behind him to deliver when it mattered for West Ham United.
Lingard brought a drought to an end by registering his first goal involvement since April’s defeat to Newcastle after assisting Michail Antonio in the closing stages on Wednesday night.
The goal sealed the win for David Moyes’ travelling Hammers side, who had fallen behind in the first half to a goal from Matheus Pereira before strikes from Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna either side of the break flipped the scoreline.
Lingard freed Antonio to run through on goal with a perfected weighted pass after connecting with Pablo Fornals in a three-on-two break, setting the striker up to lash a first-time shot into the back of Sam Johnstone’s net.
The Manchester United loanee had endured a quiet night in the West Midlands up to that point and could have found himself taken off whilst the scoreline remained level, but shone when it mattered to keep West Ham in a strong position to .
Osman has lauded Lingard’s composure for being able to pick himself up to deliver the assist, and round out a swift counter-attacking move that he believes is fundamental to West Ham’s success.
“Terrific counter-attacking football, what they’ve been good at in recent weeks,” Osman told (19/5, 22:03). “Jesse Lingard has not had the best of nights, but when it was important, he played with great composure to find Michail Antonio.”
TBR’s view:
Lingard keeping his composure in the dying moments of West Ham’s trip to West Brom was crucial to the result, as a wasted attack could have left the Baggies in with a chance of pulling level and denting the Hammers’ hopes of qualifying for the Europa League.
Instead, Moyes will hope that Lingard’s assist will help see the 28-year-old regain his form ahead of Sunday’s final day clash with Southampton, rather than turn in another near anonymous performance compared to his early efforts in claret and blue.
All West Ham need is to avoid defeat to the Saints at the London Stadium to book their place in UEFA’s secondary club competition, but will surely want to put on a show for the return of their supporters and bring the curtain down in style.
