BBC: Liverpool will not sign German duo, spending likely to be around £13m mark
Liverpool have had an incredible season but it could still end up being trophyless. The Reds finished second in the Premier League behind Manchester City despite earning 97 points.
Defeats to Chelsea and Wolves knocked them out of the League and FA Cup respectively. If Tottenham Hotspur can pull off an upset in Madrid, the Champions League may also elude them.
So the question is, how can they improve in the summer?

Plenty of names are bound to be linked with a move to Liverpool this summer. Two Germans that have been mentioned as potentially linking up with compatriot Jurgen Klopp are Julian Brandt and Timo Werner.
the Bayer Leverkusen winger has a £22m release clause in his contract and Liverpool are keen. Werner is expected to leave RB Leipzig. Bayern Munich are expected to be favourites for his signature. Liverpool remain in the hunt.
However, that Liverpool will not be signing either player.
“Any sort of spending would be below the figures spent on Shaqiri last summer, around £13 million.
“The reported interest in Julian Brandt is not going to come to fruition. There was previously interest in him, the window before they signed Mohamed Salah in 2017. He didn’t want to play second fiddle then, the situation would be worse for him now.
“The same case with Timo Werner. We’re looking at around £20 million for these players plus four-five year contracts and agent fees. It’s not going to happen.”
It is hard to see how Liverpool can improve their current squad. The Reds have been unfortunate in coming up against a sensational Manchester City side this season. Any other year and Liverpool would have won the title.
So bringing in Brandt or Werner doesn’t seem necessary but it might be the missing piece Liverpool need to overcome City.
If, however, they don’t plan on spending more than £13 million, it would seem Liverpool will back this current squad to continue building on this season’s success.
