“Rangers boss Steven Gerard thought we would be an ideal move for Greg, but the player says he has a Championship club to go to,” Fry said, .

“We have identified a couple of other targets which we will go for, although there is some hesitation as we don’t want to spoil what is a fantastic team spirit.”

It will be a good opportunity for Docherty if he does join a Championship club. He was outstanding in England’s third tier last year, but it was not enough to force his way into Gerrard’s plans this season.

Heading to a higher level may give Docherty a better chance to prove a point to the Rangers boss.

You could understand why some Rangers fans may be tempted to suggest that Docherty’s long-term future looks to lie elsewhere. But another brilliant spell – if he does leave on loan – would surely leave Gerrard with plenty to ponder.
