Barry Ferguson raves about Celtic player, says he has ‘gone up a level’ this season
that David Turnbull deserves praise for overcoming his long-term knee issue to shine in Celtic’s midfield – and thinks the Scotland ace has “gone up a level” this season.
Turnbull, 22, almost joined Celtic in the summer of 2019 from Motherwell – but a medical saw the midfielder required knee surgery. He was then signed by the Hoops a year later, for a fee of £3million ().
Last season, Turnbull was good – but only managed 35 appearances in all competitions. He scored nine goals, and laid on eight assists. This season, he is proving more and more consistent.
Even before the turn of the year, Turnbull has played 30 times – starting all 30 of Ange Postecoglou’s games in charge. During that time, Turnbull has clocked up 19 wins in those 30 matches.
Scoring eight goals, he has laid on six assists – but that is with the four-time Scotland man sitting deeper in midfield alongside Callum McGregor at times. Rangers legend Ferguson gave his options.
“Part of it, is that the first time Celtic went in for him, he did his medical and had a knee problem,” . “That has given him a bit of thinking time, you have to give him credit for coming back and playing again.
“I think he has got everything to be a top midfielder. When I watch him, if he gives it away, it won’t affect him – he will try again. He has gone up a level this season, if he continues like this he will be a top midfielder.”
Ferguson on Turnbull: Is Celtic player most-important under Postecoglou?
Callum McGregor’s brief absence earlier in the season proved that the skipper is without doubt, the club’s most-important player. Kyogo Furuhashi’s goals make him incredibly important, too.
Joe Hart is pivotal, but that might say more about his competition between the sticks – in Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas. Jota’s creativity is also incredibly important, but Turnbull is certainly in that mix.
While McGregor is the most-important, Turnbull is second-tier with Hart, Jota and Kyogo. At 22, he is only going to get better, and more consistent. £3million is looking more and more like a bargain.
