Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland could be Sunderland’s best striker option if they suffer more frustration in Will Grigg chase

Josh Maja left Sunderland earlier this month and now bringing in a new striker is a high priority at The Stadium of Light.

Jack Ross will be scouring the market for options after 16-goal Maja departed to join Bordeaux on a permanent deal.

Sunderland have been linked with a number of strikers this month.  that Gillingham’s Tom Eaves and Doncaster Rovers forward John Marquis are options for Ross.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are hopeful of landing Will Grigg from Wigan Athletic and also want Reading’s Marc McNulty, .

But if Sunderland continue to suffer frustration in pursuit of these four targets, it might be worth turning to wildcard option Lawrence Shankland.

Ayr United striker Shankland has been a revelation in the Scottish leagues, helping his side to promotion last year and now he is spearheading a push to reach the Scottish Premiership.

The 23-year-old has a remarkable goal scoring record at Ayr. Last season, he struck 29 goals in 33 matches.

And he has done even better this season with 29 goals already in just 28 games for the Scottish Championship side.

This could prove to be risky, given his lack of experience at a high level, but Shankland is young and clearly knows where the net is.

Ross should consider rolling the dice for the ex-Scotland youth striker and bring him to Sunderland as Maja’s replacement.
