Report: ‘Sensational’ player Arsenal tried for in January now offered fresh start by Champions League club
Arsenal might have tried to sign former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum in January, but it seems the Dutchman is already being offered elsewhere ahead of the summer.
has reported this weekend that Atletico Madrid are keen to bring Wijnaldum to Spain. It would be an end to the ex-Liverpool man’s time in Paris, where he has struggled to ever get going since signing on a free.
Of course, Arsenal’s interest in Wijnaldum is well-known. It was only in January that the Gunners were reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Wijnaldum. As we know, Arsenal ended up signing nobody in January with all deals postponed until the summer.

And now it is claimed that Wijnaldum is wanted by Diego Simeone at Atletico, and that Wijnaldum could be tempted to make the move to Spain. The Dutch midfielder, 31, opted to leave Liverpool for the big money on offer at PSG in the summer. But it’s not worked out since, and he’s been in and out of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership.
Wijnaldum was well-liked at Liverpool and by Jurgen Klopp. The German coach his then-midfielder as ‘sensational’ for his performances on Merseyside.
TBR’s View: Arsenal Likely To Have Moved On Anyway
At 31, you’d probably say Arsenal might have shifted their focus from signing Wijnaldum now anyway. In January, he’d have been a useful loan addition in a young squad looking to compete.
However, now you feel Arsenal might have moved on. The targets for Arteta and Edu are likely to be in the younger category, similar to those signed last summer.
Wijnaldum is still a fine player, of course. You can see why Simeone wants him at Atletico, but in terms of Arsenal, there are probably bigger fish to fry now.
