Atletico Madrid in talks to sign £32m player who flopped at Aston Villa

Atletico Madrid are reportedly in talks with a player who didn’t hit the heights many expected at Aston Villa in the Premier League.

It’s been an immense summer of change for the Villians in terms of players, with key players such as Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz all leaving Villa Park as Unai Emery’s side have spent the most out of any team in Europe with signings like Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Samuel Iling-Junior.

With Villa having a bid rejected for Michael Kayode, it’s clear that next season’s UEFA Champions League contenders are not slowing down at all in the market, with the Birmingham-based club still in need of a replacement for Diaby.

Yet one former player could be set for an impressive move despite his exploits at Villa.

Clement Lenglet in talks to join Atletico after disappointing Villa loan spell

According to journalist Santi Aouna, Atletico are in talks to sign Clement Lenglet from FC Barcelona, with the French defender spending last season on loan with Villa, where the centre-back failed to impress Emery and supporters.

Aouna wrote: “Faced with the difficulty of the Hancko and Aguerd files, Atletico Madrid began discussions with the representatives of Clement Lenglet. Contact also made with FC Barcelona. Clement Lenglet wants to join the Colchoneros.”

Once slammed by for an ‘awful’ performance for Villa, Lenglet making the move to Atletico after the year the £32m defender just had under Emery is a surprise, to say the least.

Yet with Lenglet largely impressing in La Liga when given the opportunity, there’s a real chance that the French centre-back could return to his best at Atletico, especially under a manager as good as getting the best out of defenders than Diego Simeone.

Villa will be glad they didn’t sign Lenglet this summer

Although Villa could do with another centre-back ahead of competing in the Champions League next season, the decision to not take on Lenglet permanently was the right idea from Emery.

The French defender didn’t light up Villa Park like many expected from the 29-year-old, who at this stage in his career needs a complete break from Barcelona and a new shot at trying to get back to his best before his move to Catalonia.

And Atletico could provide that for Lenglet, who could shine with the Spanish giants if given the chance to show his qualities, something the Frenchman wasn’t really offered at Villa last season.
