Newcastle overtaken by Atalanta in race to sign Nicolas Gonzalez

According to , Atalanta are leading the race to sign ACF Fiorentina star Nicolas Gonzalez, who could leave the Serie A side this summer for €35m (£30m) amid interest from top sides.

Hailed by Don Hutchison as an ‘unbelievable’ player via , Gonzalez was part of the Argentina squad that won this summer’s Copa America having guided Fiorentina to two UEFA European Conference League finals in back-to-back seasons.

With Newcastle in talks to sign Gonzalez, the 26-year-old winger could be an outstanding addition to Howe’s attacking ranks for the upcoming season, with the South American thriving in both Italy and Germany.

Yet with Atalanta in the lead to sign Gonzalez, Newcastle could be in big trouble in their bid to bring the forward to St. James’ Park, with a move to the UEFA Europa League champions an appealing move for the winger.

Newcastle need to weigh up if Gonzalez is worth the battle

With 16 goals and five assists in all competitions last season as well as a Copa America title, the 2023/24 campaign was quite the ride for Gonzalez, who is rightly being chased by some top European clubs this summer.

Yet for Newcastle, the Toon need to weigh up whether or not Gonzalez is worth the battle with Atalanta, with the Bergamo-based club having a big edge over the Premier League side due to their UEFA Champions League status.
