Report: Aston Villa owners prepared to do something unheard of in bid to land top new manager
Aston Villa are searching for a replacement for Steven Gerrard this morning after sacking the former Rangers man last night.
The hammering at Fulham ensured Gerrard was given the boot, with the Villa owners said to have been fuming at the manner of the defeat at Craven Cottage. Of course, all eyes are now on who will replace Gerrard, with Villa said to be looking at a big name such as Mauricio Pochettino.
And according to , Villa’s owners are prepared to give the new manager a blank cheque when it comes to spending in January and into the summer. Described as being willing to offer a new manager ‘carte blanche’ when it comes to new signings, it would be a huge move by the club.

Despite FFP regulations, Villa’s owners are clearly willing to put huge sums in once again. This, despite backing Gerrard with money as well for big money signings like Diego Carlos and Philippe Coutinho.
claims that any move for Pochettino is likely to be nigh on impossible to do. The former Spurs boss is said to be waiting for a big European job after losing his role at PSG. Thomas Frank is also admired, although it’s believed Brentford are confident Frank will turn down any approach.
TBR’s View: Villa Board Want Big Things
Rather than simply go for the survival specialist and simply look to consolidate things at Villa Park, it seems Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are going big again.
Clearly, they want a huge name to lead Villa back to the top and are willing to offer endless funds to help that new manager achieved those goals.
Pochettino seems unlikely as it stands. But you never know in football and with so much money being waved, Poch might find it a job he can’t turn down. A blank cheque is unheard of in football, and it would certainly send the January market into overdrive.
