Report: West Ham now ready to let £4m man leave, with interest mounting this month
Aston Villa are lining up a move for West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph, .
Steven Gerrard is looking for a backup keeper to provide cover for Emiliano Martinez, the Villans’ first-choice shot-stopper and the former Rangers boss has identified Randolph as an ideal target.
Randolph returned to the Hammers in January 2020 following two and a half seasons at Middlesbrough. With the £4 million () Republic of Ireland international one of the first signings of David Moyes’ second spell in charge of West Ham.
However, he has since fallen down the pecking order after the summer acquisition of Alphonse Areola on a season-long loan from PSG. With David Martin, son of Hammers legend Alvin Martin, also on the books as a senior keeper.
Areola has impressed in his nine appearances in a Hammers shirt, keeping six clean sheets, all of which have been in cup competitions. And many identify him as the long-term replacement for 36-year-old Lukasz Fabianski, meaning Moyes would likely allow Randolph to depart for Villa Park should an offer be received.
Gerrard was quick to turn around Villa’s league form after becoming manager in November 2021, following a title-winning spell in charge of Rangers, lifting the Midlands side 11 points clear of the relegation zone, although they have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United. And his new employers are backing him in the January transfer window. With his former Liverpool teammate Phillipe Coutinho joining on loan from Barcelona for the remainder of the season.
Villa are also reportedly set to complete the signing of Everton full-back Lucas Digne. The Frenchman was also on West Ham’s radar amidst reports of a falling out with Toffees boss Rafa Benitez. However, Moyes’ side apparently deemed his current wages of £130,000 a week too high.
