Aston Villa targets Gary Cahill and Tyrone Mings would be excellent together

Aston Villa have been busy so far in the summer transfer window, but it’s still unclear on what their defence will look like come the first game of the Premier League season in August.

Dean Smith’s side have been linked with a number of centre-back targets and it will be intriguing to see who they manage to sign in the remainder of the window.

has reported that Villa are keen on re-signing Tyrone Mings following his success on loan last season, where he helped the club win promotion from the Championship in the play-off final.

But the explains that the Midlands giants will not overpay for the 26-year-old and his club Bournemouth are haggling over a transfer fee for him.

Meanwhile, the reports (citing the Express) that Villa are close to securing a deal for free agent Gary Cahill following his release from Chelsea.

The report details that they have beaten off competition to win the hunt for the 33-year-old.

Villa fans can look forward to seeing a brilliant combination if the two targets are paired together in the heart of defence next season.

Cahill is certainly not over the hill at 33 and would bring some much-needed experience to Smith’s squad.

The centre-back is a former Chelsea captain and earned 61 caps for England, while he didn’t look out of sort in the eight games he played last season.

He’s capable of performing in the top-flight still and would be an ideal mentor to the current Bournemouth defender.

Mings is a left-footed centre-back that is strong like Cahill and he deserves another opportunity to show he can make a serious impact in the Premier League.

Villa would have two powerhouse in defence with them, with Mings the younger of the duo with pace and it could be an exciting blend.
