Aston Villa should take the plunge on defender Steven Caulker.
The one-cap England international is currently a free agent after activating a release clause in his Dundee contract.
He had been playing his football in Scotland since February of this year after leaving Queens Park Rangers.

In total, he made 17 appearances for the club and scored one goal.
During his time at the club he was able to come back into some form after some troubling times recently.
Caulker has struggled with addiction and depression, which he has spoken openly about.
The Feltham-born defender, who has played for Premier League big-hitters Liverpool and Tottenham, is now searching for a new club, , but it looks as though Championship side Villa are also in the hunt.
, Steve Bruce wants to offer him a trial.
An axe to grind
Caulker has endured some tough times in recent years, but a move to Villa could be the turning point for him.
The Midlands club would offer the player a chance to make amends for his poor stint with QPR.

It simply didn’t work out for Caulker at Loftus Road, and he may feel as though he has a point to prove – and Villa could be the perfect club for him to do that.
The Villans are in need of a centre-back and have been linked with a host of names.
John Terry, Robert Huth and James Collins are a few that have been bandied about recently.
The ideal age
Caulker is significantly younger than the aforementioned names.
It seems as though he has been around for a long time, but he is still only 26 and is impressively mobile.

It really could be worth it for Villa to do this deal, although offering a trial is probably the right thing to do.
If Caulker is in a good place and does OK in any trial, then Steve Bruce should not think twice. He’s still a great defender and could work really well alongside James Chester.
