Aston Villa still hoping to sign ‘key’ £39m target for Unai Emery on deadline day

Aston Villa fans will already be excited to see Marcus Rashford in claret and blue for the remainder of the season, but Monchi may not be finished there.

Following their defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on the weekend, Villa are in eighth place in the Premier League, and the prospect of chasing a Champions League spot is still not beyond Unai Emery’s side.

However, Villa fans will likely feel as if the options available to Emery need to be strengthened further before today’s transfer deadline.

Villa were forced to play Boubacar Kamara alongside Ezri Konsa at the back against Wolves, a move that hurt their chances of winning two-fold.

Kamara isn’t at his best as a centre-back and Emery’s side also lost control in midfield as a result.

Axel Disasi remains a key target for Aston Villa on deadline day

That being said, journalist Kirsty Edwards has just shared a live update from Villa Park in regards to the club’s plans over the next 12 hours or so, including their pursuit of Axel Disasi.

Disasi wants to join Villa instead of Tottenham Hotspur, and the defender remains a ‘key target’ for Monchi today according to Edwards’ update.

Initially referring to Marco Asensio, who should arrive at the club today, Edwards said: “We are expecting confirmation of that one today. He was having a medical yesterday.

“Just turned 29, Asensio will bring a wealth of experience that’s for sure. He won it all with Real Madrid.

“Things have not gone to plan for him at PSG this season, in the 12 league games he has appeared in he has scored a couple of goals and four assists.

“The question remains when he comes in, just like Marcus Rashford, how fit will he be and how long will it take him to get up to speed.

“But absolutely brilliant and another positive addition to their forward line, I think the fans will be excited about that if they can get that over the line today.

“Two things remain though that Villa fans will be desperately hoping for today. One is a centre back, we have seen how short they are in that position right now, because of injuries.

“Boubacar Kamara has had to fill in a centre back for the last couple of games, which has been far from ideal for them.

“We know that Axel Disasi is a key target, reports are he is keen to come here, it’s whether Villa can agree a deal with Chelsea and we know Spurs are in for him as well.

“The other key thing that Villa fans will very much be hoping for today, is that there are no further bids for Ollie Watkins.”

Unai Emery can’t afford to lose Ollie Watkins

Villa fans will be hoping for some more Monchi magic before the window slams shut today.

Monchi was crucial in signing Rashford on loan from Manchester United, who will be determined to show his worth under Emery.

Of course, as Edwards mentions, keeping Ollie Watkins at Villa Park will be absolutely crucial for the club’s aspirations in the second half of the season.

Arsenal are still interested in Watkins, who actually needed to go off at half-time with an issue against Wolves on the weekend.

A busy day for Villa, whose squad could still look quite different once the deadline passes.
