Aston Villa star John McGinn justifying Sir Alex Ferguson’s reported seal of approval

Aston Villa’s impressive form this season has largely been attributed to the performances of the enigmatic Jack Grealish. Rightly so. The local lad has been in impressive form throughout the campaign and has Aston Villa fans thinking of a place in Europe next season.

But another player who has to receive massive praise for his recent form is Scotland international John McGinn.

The 26-year-old was a bargain buy from Hibernian in 2018 and helped Aston Villa win promotion to the Premier League by scoring the winning goal in the 2019 Championship play-off final.

He then went on to play a key role in Aston Villa’s survival last season, returning from an ankle injury to help Dean Smith’s side to a great escape. It was no surprise when McGinn was handed a new contract last month.

This season has perhaps been his best yet for the club, especially in recent games.

His performances against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Manchester United have seen him receive rave reviews on social media from fans and pundits alike.

Indeed, his performance at Old Trafford showcased just why the Red Devils were linked with his signature over the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson had suggested McGinn as a target to his former club over the summer but Villa placed a £50 million price-tag on his head.

McGinn is a footballer’s footballer. He rarely complains, is strong defensively, works tirelessly but also has an eye for a key pass. There’s no doubt he is something of a throwback. It is no wonder Fergie was so keen on a player who shares so many characteristics with his former general Roy Keane.

Aston Villa will just be glad that United did not get a hold of a man who is proving the engine for a European charge at Villa Park this season.
