Aston Villa reportedly approached Alberto Moreno but he has chosen Villarreal

Newly-promoted Aston Villa are among the clubs who approached defender Alberto Moreno with a view to signing him on a free transfer this summer,

27-year-old Moreno was a free agent after his Liverpool contract expired at the end of the season and Villa joined four clubs from his native Spain – Villarreal, Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Sociedad – as well Zenit and Marseille in the chase for his signature.

But Moreno, who got a Champions League winner’s medal as an unused substitute in the final after his last Reds game, prefers Villarreal and will move there soon.

Villa have since signed Matt Targett from Southampton to bolster their left back options going into their first season back in the top flight.

Moreno got something of a reputation for being defensively suspect during his time at Anfield, where his attacking intent was not matched by his ability getting back.

He could have been another Aly Cissokho – who also used to play for Liverpool – in that sense, but it’s not that often an international who plays for a top six side and has plenty of years left in the tank becomes available for free.

The scale of the reported interest in his signature underlines the talent Moreno has, but perhaps it’s better all-round that Villa have now got Targett instead.
