Aston Villa reach agreement to sign £98m Premier League player, but there’s a problem

Aston Villa have reportedly agreed terms with a Premier League team to sign one of their most expensive players, but there’s an issue with the deal.

Unai Emery’s side have been the biggest spenders in Europe this summer, with Villa already paying close to £150m on the likes of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Samuel Iling-Junior, with the Villians also raising over £100m from a number of key departures, namely Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby.

With Villa having a bid rejected for Michael Kayode, the Villa Park side are showing no sign of slowing down with their spending, with Emery keen to get his side up to a standard that can compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Yet it appears that one of Villa’s more audacious moves could be about to come to an end.

Villa reach agreement to sign Romelu Lukaku, but he only wants Napoli

According to Il Mattino via , Villa have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign striker Romelu Lukaku, yet as per the report, the Belgian international only has his eyes set on joining Napoli, with the forward keen to reunite with Antonio Conte.

Having cost Chelsea an astonishing £98m back in 2021, Lukaku’s return to west London has gone down as arguably one of the worst signings in Premier League history, with the striker spending the last two seasons out on loan back in Italy.

With the Blues again looking to offload Lukaku, it appears that Villa have emerged as a contender to sign the former Inter Milan superstar, with Chelsea eager to offload the forward as soon as possible without having to wait around for Napoli.

Indeed, Lukaku’s future will be a big storyline to follow this summer, and if Napoli fail to sail Victor Osimhen, there’s a real chance that the Belgian icon could end up at Villa Park, with terms already agreed with Chelsea.

Lukaku at Villa Park would be quite the sight next season

Lukaku’s career is something of an enigma, with the striker putting up the numbers to prove he’s one of the best attackers in recent memory, yet somehow always falling flat when it comes to the major moments.

And at Villa Park, seeing Lukaku pair up alongside Ollie Watkins would be quite the sight, with the duo likely to work well off each other if the striker does end up agreeing to join Villa this summer.

With Villa in the Champions League, top-quality players are needed if Emery is to make an impact in the competition, and for all of Lukaku’s faults in recent years, the striker would provide the Birmingham-based side exactly that in their attacking ranks.
