Aston Villa player says he needs to start being more ‘selfish’ on the pitch now
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins says he knows he needs to be more selfish in order to get back among the goals.
Watkins has been in the England picture under Gareth Southgate but was not named in the Three Lions squad for the recent international break.
He has scored just once in the Premier League this season as Steven Gerrard’s side have struggled generally, putting their manager under pressure.
Watkins told the he knows he needs to shoot more often and be more selfish to change his recent record.

Villa striker Watkins knows he must be more ‘selfish’
When asked about his recent form in the interview, Watkins said: “I feel like I have been playing well.
“The number one thing is I always work hard.
“Maybe I need to be a little more selfish and shoot. I like to think I am a team player. It will come.
“I will score some goals and go from there. I just need to be patient.”
With just weeks to go until former Villa defender Southgate names his squad for the World Cup, Watkins’ prospects look bleak.
That said, nobody has really nailed down that backup spot to Harry Kane, with Tammy Abraham probably the most likely contender to go to Qatar.
But if there was another English forward absolutely hammering in the goals when the squad is named, they would have every chance of going.
Watkins needs to make sure he is that man, and Gerrard would likely thank him for it as well as Villa look to improve after a slow start to the campaign.
