Aston Villa now ‘increasingly’ want to make signing in one position in January

Despite Matty Cash’s brilliant form this season, there’s the growing feeling that Villa’s squad is unbalanced right now.

And the club will now target a right-back in January according to , one to provide competition and support for Cash.

Securing a new left-back was the priority in the summer with Lucas Digne linked with an exit, however, the Frenchman has turned his form right around.

Moreover, Villa decided to settle with Cash as their only obvious right-back going into the season, given they had versatile options across the back line.

However, there would now be an understandable reluctance to push the likes of Ezri Konsa out wide given how superb he’s performing in the middle.

Perhaps Villa will target a very similar profile to left-back Alex Moreno, an experienced head, one that Unai Emery trusts.

Either way, with the volume of games to come a signing does now seem essential.

Despite this need, there haven’t been any strong links to a defender thus far ahead of the window opening.

Emery does often lean on his knowledge of La Liga when approaching the transfer window, and it’ll be interesting to see if there is a target in mind.

Villa have now become an incredibly attractive prospect for top players across Europe, a place where you can reach world-class potential.

But perhaps Villa’s biggest priority in January will just be to avoid any pursuits of their midfield star Douglas Luiz.

Arsenal’s is often mentioned, even if a deal does seem very unlikely in the near future.

But Luiz has become so integral to this Aston Villa side and would represent a huge loss for Emery in any window.

Luckily, that is probably not something that the club needs to fear right now.

And all focus will now be on two incredibly tough tests at Villa Park – first the arrival of Manchester City on Wednesday, followed by Emery’s old side on the weekend.
