Aston Villa newbie Anwar El Ghazi was big fan of Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Aston Villa have recently acquired the talented Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi on loan for the season. The two-cap Netherlands international has arrived on loan from Lille until the end of the season, with an option for Villa to make the move permanent.

El Ghazi may not be a name familiar to many of the managers in the Championship, despite his successes with Ajax in the past. But one Championship boss who will know all about him is Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine, who has led Leeds to the top of the Championship table, managed El Ghazi during his ill-fated spell at Lille.

about the Leeds manager’s infamously unusual methods last year, after he had been appointed as the manager of the Ligue 1 side.

He spoke of the tough training regime implemented by Bielsa and how it made the team like ‘brothers

“The coach said we had to be a family together and when you’re eating together, sleeping next door to each other, you become a family. We are like brothers now.

“He is a little bit different, he can be very aggressive and shout at people but then he’ll be very quiet.

“He pushes everybody to the limit, for example, my body fat used to be 10% or 11% and now it’s 8%./b>

It did not work at Lille. Unfortunately, not everyone bought into the new management style. Bielsa cutting many of the veterans out led to division and he was gone by Christmas.

However, the early signs are it is working at Leeds. With largely the same group available to Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom last season Bielsa looks to have molded Leeds into genuine promotion candidates.

Aston Villa’s new flying winger will no doubt want to beat Leeds to promotion this season. But it will be interesting to see if Bielsa’s methods are more successful in West Yorkshire than they were in Northern France.
