Aston Villa will hope Michy Batshuayi has same golden touch as his compatriot did several years ago

Aston Villa are reportedly keen on landing Michy Bathshayi with summer signing Wesley ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Belgian is among a list of targets for the struggling team, according to Sky Sports.

It does suggest in the report that Chelsea aren’t overly keen on allowing him to leave in January but that won’t stop Villa from trying.

If they were to tempt the Blues into letting the 26-year-old leave, it wouldn’t be the first time Villa had hired a Belgian to fire them to safety.

During the 2012/13 campaign, Paul Lambert signed Christian Benteke for £7 million from Genk .

The striker arrived as an unknown quantity and made one of the most prolific impacts the Premier League has ever seen.

In 34 appearances for the Villa, he netted 19 goals, with 14 coming after the turn of the year.

He helped the club no end and constantly took on the mantle of scoring the goals to keep the team in the Premier League.

When he moved to Liverpool in 2015, Villa struggled to replace him and were subsequently relegated from the Premier League that season.

Prolific

Dean Smith would hope that Batshuayi could have a similar impact.

Last season he spent time on loan with Crystal Palace, scoring six goals in 13 games and he has proved he knows where the net is.

It’s ambitious to expect the 29-cap international to be quite as prolific as Benteke was.

If he was to be signed it would certainly help, however. Smith would be looking for him to get close to 10 goals to try and help his team over the survival threshold.

If he could do that, the Belgian will be remembered as fondly as his compatriot was all those years ago.
