Aston Villa leading race to sign 28-year-old defender on a free, he cost £25m back in 2019

Aston Villa continue to make waves in the transfer market and they are targeting a move for Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso on a free transfer – with boss Unai Emery moving ‘well in advance’.

, 28, is out of contract in the summer at Diego Simeone’s side. That is despite costing Atleti a fee of just five years ago. The Spain star has gone on to play 164 games for Atleti since his move.

But it looks as though his spell with the La Liga giants is set to come to an end, even if he is first choice right now – playing 35 times this season. A player Antonio Conte wanted at Tottenham back in 2022.

He looks set to leave Atletico Madrid and a report from claims that Aston Villa are in pole position to land the defender for nothing. That is despite interest from both Juventus and AC Milan.

Aston Villa on pole position for Mario Hermoso on a free transfer

The report claims that Emery has already moved to bring Hermoso to Villa Park at the end of the season in what is likely to prove a potential bargain. Hermoso is a top, top defender and a coup, if he is signed.

Hermoso has only ever played in Spain so it will be a big decision for him to leave his birthplace. But judging by the interest in him, it does seem as if he will be going to Italy or England come the summer.

As his contract gets closer to the expiry date, you would imagine other Premier league clubs will start to show interest in Hermoso. But, Emery is clearly working hard to get it done before others have a chance.
