Aston Villa fans react as Steven Gerrard comments on need to improve defence

Steven Gerrard has told Aston Villa’s website that he wants to improve the defensive structure of his new side – and Villa fans have reacted on Twitter.

Gerrard gave his first interview to Villa’s website, published on Monday. He was asked what he would like to change about his newly-inherited side.

Comparing what he wants with the side that have struggled under Dean Smith of late – consecutively losing their last five Premier League matches.

Villa need a defensive structure and Gerrard states that is the main change he needs – when comparing his identity, to how Villa played under Smith.

“One thing I would like to instill, and improve on, is the structure of the team from a defensive point of view,”

Gerrard has a point. Villa have conceded a huge 133 goals in 87 Premier League matches. That included 67 in his first season, and 20 this term.

Villa do play with an attacking freedom. But their leaky defence even saw Smith drop England international and captain Tyrone Mings at one point.

What are Villa fans saying in response to Gerrard’s comments?

It is an exciting time for Villa fans. Many have complained for much of this season for their leaky defence. Gerrard has identified the key issue.

That has delighted fans, who had become frustrated at Smith’s beleaguered attempts at trying to plug the gap. Solidity, is needed, out of possession.

Villa fans reacted to Gerrard’s comments. Some are simply excited to see a more defensively astute side out of possession, knowing when to press.

Gerrard did mastermind Rangers keeping 26 clean sheets in 38 league games last term. Some, think Mings could be dropped completely.
