Aston Villa coach John Terry says Chelsea player should have got up on Instagram
Aston Villa came from behind to draw level against Chelsea though Anwar El Ghazi’s well-taken goal was marred by controversy, as the Midlands side netted with a Chelsea player on the deck. John Terry, though, has given his verdict on the situation.
Olivier Giroud had put Chelsea ahead in the first half after a lovely Blues move that saw England defender Ben Chilwell’s neat cross headed in at the near post. But Villa equalised soon into the second half thanks to El Ghazi.
In the build up to Matty Cash delivering a deep cross to Netherlands international El Ghazi, Jack Grealish and Andreas Christensen both hit the deck after a collision. Grealish got to his feet and played the ball to Cash, who crossed for El Ghazi.
But Christensen stayed down. The rules state that Villa did not need to kick the ball out of play as it was not a head injury, and played on. Asked about the incident, Terry sided with his current employers – stating Christensen should have got up.
TBR’s view – Terry has got it bang on
The surprising element to his verdict is that he has put Villa ahead of Chelsea, stating that Christensen should have played on rather than Villa kick the ball out. To be fair to Villa, Christensen was clearly feigning injury, given he was fine to continue.
Chelsea can feel hard done by but in realistic terms, they should have closed down Cash quicker to stop the cross and perhaps closed down the space afforded to El Ghazi who drifted in at the back post. Christensen, meanwhile, will need to learn from this.
