As David Luiz struggles at Arsenal, Joachim Anderson is quietly impressing at Lyon

It hasn’t been the start David Luiz will have wanted at Arsenal.

The 32-year-old was supposed to be the man to help shore things up at the back for the Gunners, but Unai Emery’s side have actually looked even more suspect with the Brazilian in the team alongside Sokratis.

In his six appearances so far, Luiz is yet to deliver a convincing performance for Arsenal and mistakes have been plentiful.

Alarmingly, the South American is currently showing signs of being the player he was during his first stint at Chelsea rather than his second.

Emery will be desperate for the experienced defender to turn things around, before he is written off completely by the fans.

Luiz’s form will be a big concern for Arsenal supporters, who might well have seen another face in the team’s backline had things panned out differently.

TBR’s view

Joachim Anderson was reportedly close to a move to Arsenal before they snapped up Luiz.

The Gunners apparently had a bid of £43 million turned down for the Dane and his then-Sampdoria teammate Denis Praet ().

Andersen eventually joined French side Lyon thanks to their Champions League status, and has been quietly impressive over in Ligue 1.

The ball-playing centre-half has a pass completion rate of 91.3% so far (), which eclipses Luiz’s 85.7%. And crucially, he hasn’t made any errors.

He’s been solid for ninth-placed Lyon, and had his best game to date against Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend despite the 1-0 loss to the champions, and he is threatening to look like the one that got away for Arsenal.
